Football scoreboards, basketball scoreboards and baseball scoreboards have all recently torn a page out of what has been a must-have at fans’ houses for year: high definition screens. With technology, definition and size that are so incredible they threaten to overtake the game being played, these high definition screens are the most advanced displays in the world.
What is the one thing that Yankee fans are sure to notice when they settle into their new, wider seats at the brand new stadium of the beloved Bronx Bombers? No, it’s not the sushi food carts, the wider pavilions or even the overhauled Monument Park. It is the massive Mitsubishi-designed 1080p high definition screen that covers one quarter of the outfield. The screen, the biggest in the world at the moment, measures 103 feet wide by 58 feet high and has almost 9 million embedded LEDs (light emitting diodes) stuffed into its 6, 000 square foot frame. On this baseball scoreboard screen, fans can follow player introductions, replays, and all types of crystal-clear, in-game entertainment from any seat in the park.
The saying everything is bigger in Texas is just about to add one more enormous example when the new $1 billion Dallas Cowboys stadium opens to fans this fall. There, hanging above the field, will be the largest high definition screen in the world. It is 160 feet wide and 72 feet high, with over 10 million LEDs. For Cowboys-owner Jerry Jones who wanted the best of the best, the high definition football scoreboard screen was central to his vision. Because of the scalability of LED, the size of the numbers on a scoreboard can be up to 3 feet without losing any clarity. The viewing angle for scoreboards has also been increased to as much as 100 degrees of horizontal visibility–enough so that the display is comfortably viewed by fans in any seat.
The state of the art in scoreboard technology also extends to the unseen parts of the display. The computer processors that came of age in the 1980s and the wireless improvements from earlier this decade have been integrated into the scoreboard for incredible effects. Now the major functions of a scoreboard: the score, crowd noise, excitement and advertising can all be controlled wirelessly and adapted in real time with programming that is customized to that moment. Arenas not only show replays but can instantly include camera downloads, DVDs, and all kinds of internet content including JPEG formats. All of this is now controlled and reviewed by scoreboard operators on LCD devices or their own PDAs.
